August 19, 2018, Sunday - Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Time: 1:00pm – 2:30pm

Location: A-Mill Artist Lofts, 415 Main Street SE

Pillsbury A Mill Tour

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities.

Highlights include the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis, with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft through a glass floor. Guests will discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era; see the architectural highlights of the recently completed A-Mill Artist Lofts built within the historic mill buildings; and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex. This tour is presented in partnership with A-Mill Artist Lofts.

The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Lab Theater, 700 First Street N

RISE – 2018 Student Choreography Showcase

RISE: 2018 Student Choreography Showcase was created to give a voice to young choreographers on the rise. This showcase offers student choreographers ages 14-22 an opportunity to exhibit their work on a professional stage. The dance pieces will be adjudicated by a panel of working choreographers, dance educators and industry professionals. A cash prize will be given to the first, second and third place choreographers.

This year’s charity is Give Kids the World Village. Give Kids the World Village is an 84-acre, nonprofit resort in Central Florida that provides weeklong, cost-free vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families. The goal is to raise $10,000! www.gktw.org. $20 general admission.

August 19, 2018, Sunday - AUTOPTIC 2018 at Aria

Time: 10am – 6pm

Location: Aria, 105 First Street North

AUTOPTIC 2018  Free and open to the public.

In late 2012, a group of Twin Cities based cartoonists and publishers began planning for what was to become AUTOPTIC's inaugural show the following year. Rather than creating “just another comics/ graphics festival,” organizers chose to take a giant step forward into the bigger, messier world of independent culture at large. To accomplish this they showcased not only cartoonists and zinesters, but also poster artists, printmakers, musicians, alternative and small labels, illustrators, designers and more, ranging from the exclusively local to the internationally acclaimed. At its core, AUTOPTIC is a juried, expo-style show, but orbiting the expo are readings and talks, artist showcases and music events, held both at Aria and several other sites throughout Minneapolis. In addition to 120+ exhibitors from around the world (and around the corner), AUTOPTIC will feature an international slate of special guest artists.

August 18, 2018, Saturday - Engineering the Falls: History Player William de la Barre Tour at the Mill City Museum

Time:  10:30 am – 12 noon

Location:  Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd Street

Engineering the Falls: History Player William de la Barre Tour

Additional Date: September 8

Join a walking tour of St. Anthony Falls led by costumed History Player William de la Barre, the Austrian engineer who spent half a century developing Minneapolis flour milling and waterpower. Visit the Minneapolis riverfront, the west side milling district and the Stone Arch Bridge and hear about the many ways the falls have changed over the years.

William de la Barre, an Austrian engineer, arrived in Minneapolis in 1878 and was hired by C.C. Washburn to oversee reconstruction of the Washburn A Mill after its 1878 explosion. De la Barre was soon involved in the management of waterpower companies at St. Anthony Falls, and spent a 50-year career engineering the falls to maximize the power available to Minneapolis millers.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

August 18, 2018, Saturday - Warehouse District Walking Tour

Time: 9:30am – 11:30am

Location:Edina Realty, 226 Washington Avenue N

Preserve Minneapolis presents: Warehouse District Walking Tour

The Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District is the state's largest commercial district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Spread over a 30-block area, the district includes 140 buildings and structures. The district is historically important as an area of early commercial growth during the development of the city of Minneapolis and as the city's warehouse and wholesaling district that expanded during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Minneapolis became a major distribution center in the upper Midwest. Wholesalers were attracted to the area northwest of the downtown business district where land values were relatively low and railroad lines nearby. The leading wholesale lines included groceries, fruits and produce, hardware, dry goods, glassware and, most importantly, agricultural implements.

The district is also architecturally significant for its remarkably intact concentration of commercial buildings designed by the city's leading architects including Cass Gilbert, Long and Long, Harry Wild Jones, Kees and Colburn, and Hewitt and Brown. Stylistically, the buildings represent every major style from the period including Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Renaissance Revival and the Commercial Style. The warehouse district has retained its sense of time and place with original bridges still in place, streets paved with bricks and trains passing through daily on the track beds around which the area first developed.

The tour will discuss the overall history of the district, the history and architectural styles of individual buildings and the architects who designed them. The tour will walk one mile and is ADA accessible. The tour guide is Rolf Anderson. $10. Kids (and strollers) are welcome, but no dogs or other pets, please.
