August 2, 2017, Wednesday - The Soap Factory Common Room: Silent Tour

Time:  Meet at 6:00 on August 2nd at The Soap Factory to join the Silent Tour, this tour is a walking tour and you are advised to wear comfortable shoes.

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

Common Room: The Silent Tour

TOUR DESCRIPTION:
In an increasingly frenetic world, Common Room carves out an island of quietude with this walking tour. The Silent Tour explores our relation to each other and our surroundings without words—how does this change our experience of our world, how challenging is it to be silent, can we even not communicate? Taking cues from John Cage’s 4’33” (Silent Symphony) and mindfulness meditations, The Silent Tour will embark from The Soap Factory, exploring our external and internal landscapes quietly, together.

ABOUT COMMON ROOM:
Common Room is a series of ar...tist-led tours of Twin Cities sites, with each tour themed around a specific concept that the group uses as a lens to explore facets of the urban geography — in the past, these themes have included cats, alleys, skyways, fishing, freeway construction, weather, community kitchens, personal memory, and many more. Common Room is the work by Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant, along with a rotating lineup of contributors. Now in its eighth year, is using the occasion of the Rethinking Public Spaces project to expand the scope of its programming for this summer to travel beyond The Soap Factory, and various neighborhoods of the Twin Cities by foot, bicycle and bus. Common Room’s themes in 2017 will include silence, sacredness, islands, neighborhood music, and more.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Sergio Vucci is a Minneapolis-based artist. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his work focuses primarily on engaging his surroundings outside of gallery spaces and on relational interactions, co-authoring ephemeral creative experiences with participants in response to place.

Andy Sturdevant is an artist and writer living in Minneapolis. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, and his artistic projects have been exhibited at venues in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and elsewhere.

August 1, 2017, Tuesday - National Night Out at Gold Medal Park

Time: 5pm - 7:30pm

Location: Gold Medal Park

National Night Out is an annual event that takes place across American, meant to get neighbors together for a night of camaraderie and community.

Editor's Note - In previous years, a select team of Mill District residents organized what grew to be huge a gathering on the Chicago Mall. However, with the continual addition of new condos and apartments, one ginormous celebration is no longer feasible. The planning committee has disbanded, and smaller gatherings are encouraged.

This year, we are very grateful to Luke Kleckner of Re/Max, Waterstone Mortgage and The Legacy for sponsoring a more laid back event in Gold Medal Park. Meet the people of our Gold Medal Park neighborhood while enjoying root beer floats, snacks and other refreshments, plus caricatures for the kids!
