August 20, 2017, Sunday - Watershed by Bike II

Time:  10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Location: Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, 2522 Marshall Street Northeast

Watershed by Bike II

Join Saint Paul songwriter, poet and cycling advocate Ben Weaver for a short (less than 6 mile) bike ride from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) through the Holland neighborhood and back to the Mississippi River and MWMO. The group will make several stops enroute to experience this watershed area and discuss questions such as: What is a watershed? How big is your watershed? Learn how we can nurture a healthy relationship with the great Mississippi River through the daily choices we make that impact the watersheds in which we live.

Along the ride we’ll notice the path water takes through the neighborhood to the river and make a brief stop for a snack break. There will be time at the beginning and end of the ride to explore the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) campus where you’ll see raingardens and many other features designed to collect rain runoff, minimizing its ability to carry pollution to the river. Expect to hear a little music and poetry as well. All ages and abilities are encouraged to join for this event.

On the day of the ride we will meet at the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO). MWMO has a parking lot should you choose to drive.

THIS EVENT WILL BE RAIN OR SHINE. If there is lightning or severe weather the event will move indoors for a mini concert and waterehd interpreptive activity onsite in the MWMO building.

This ride will be led by Ben Weaver and is sponsored by the Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association with a grant from the Miississippi Watershed Management Organization. If you have specific needs or questions feel free to reach out Adelheid Koski at the Holland Neighborhood Improvemnt Association: a.koski@hnia.org.

August 18, 2017, Friday - Vivify-A Still Life in Motion at the Southern Theater (3 nights)

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue South

Vivify - A Still Life in Motion

August 18 – 20

Vivify- A Still Life in Motion explores the kinetic possibilities of iconic visual art. Minnesota Dance Collaborative is excited by the challenge of reinterpreting classic works of art through the mediums of music and movement. Dancers will bring to life the elements of art with a focus of the visceral connection of color and emotion. Though the majority of dances are choreographed to instrumental music, we seek to honor the voice of the artists we highlight by using their own statements as a way to transition from dance to dance and color to color.

August 18, 2017, Friday - Live Music at Day Block Brewing

Time: 9pm Doors | 21+ show | $5 Cover in tap room, dining room is always free

Location: Day Block Brewing, 1105 Washington Avenue S

Tonight:

11:30p Part Time Ex’s

Part Time Ex’s is your typical on again, off again type situation. Formed in the catacombs of St. Paul, the players have grown accustomed over time and heartache to doing that thing you like with the guitars and drums and what have you. Part Time Ex’s plays authentic rock-and-roll with an edge that screams “I can’t believe she left me for him.” Imagine if early seventies Rod Stewart had joined The Rolling Stones instead of Ron Wood. “If you want my body and you think I’m sexy, come on sugar, let me know.” We aim to play high energy music that inspires people to have fun. Part Time Ex’s wants you to go for it, live in the now, we promise not t...o tell the new person. They could never love you like we do anyway.

10:30p The Back 40s

The Back 40s deliver Midwest rock and roll. Hooks, harmony, jangle, tone. Songs about people you know, delivered with punch. This music is meant for bars, cars, and nights beneath stars. You know this band. You stand next to them at shows. You see 'em at record stores. Now you hum their songs. They're your songs. Because it all starts with the songs. Shuffled back and forth, stripped down, rebuilt by hand. Ten found a new home on the band's debut release --"Relative Paradise."

9:30p May As Well

The power trio is a lost art. Like the samurai of medieval Japan, the power trio once kept faith with a dignified sophistication and structure from which they drew their power. May As Well embraces this lost art, employing youth, wisdom, hooks and power chords as its modern day Katana. The band’s touchstone is the first rock that rolled.

August 16, 2017, Wednesday - Common Room–Sacred Space Tour

Time: 6:00pm

Starting location: The Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

Common Room – Sacred Space Tour

Common Room is a series of artist-led tours of Twin Cities sites, with each tour themed around a specific concept that the group uses as a lens to explore facets of the urban geography. Common Room is the work of Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant, along with a rotating lineup of contributors. Now in its eighth year, it is using the occasion of the Rethinking Public Spaces project to expand the scope of its' programming for this summer to travel beyond The Soap Factory to various neighborhoods of the Twin Cities by foot, bicycle and bus. Common Room’s themes in 2017 include silence, sacredness, islands, neighborhood music and more.

Common Room is one of several public projects being presented by The Soap Factory as a part of Here& There. Here & There is The Soap Factory's out-of-building programming during 2017 while the building undergoes renovation. The Sacred Space Tour explores our relation to the idea of the sacred in our daily lives—both concrete and symbolic. This bus tour will stop at various locations, looking at public, intrapersonal and internal sacred spaces, investigating how they operate and their impacts on us and our city. What is sacredness? Where is it housed? What does it do? How do we access it? These are some of the underpinning questions spurring this journey.
