August 16, 2017, Wednesday - Common Room–Sacred Space Tour

Time: 6:00pm

Starting location: The Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

Common Room – Sacred Space Tour

Common Room is a series of artist-led tours of Twin Cities sites, with each tour themed around a specific concept that the group uses as a lens to explore facets of the urban geography. Common Room is the work of Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant, along with a rotating lineup of contributors. Now in its eighth year, it is using the occasion of the Rethinking Public Spaces project to expand the scope of its' programming for this summer to travel beyond The Soap Factory to various neighborhoods of the Twin Cities by foot, bicycle and bus. Common Room’s themes in 2017 include silence, sacredness, islands, neighborhood music and more.

Common Room is one of several public projects being presented by The Soap Factory as a part of Here& There. Here & There is The Soap Factory's out-of-building programming during 2017 while the building undergoes renovation. The Sacred Space Tour explores our relation to the idea of the sacred in our daily lives—both concrete and symbolic. This bus tour will stop at various locations, looking at public, intrapersonal and internal sacred spaces, investigating how they operate and their impacts on us and our city. What is sacredness? Where is it housed? What does it do? How do we access it? These are some of the underpinning questions spurring this journey.
