The Minneapolis Duathlon includes a 3.1-mile run, 15.9-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run which can be done individually or as a 2- or 3-person relay, or you just do the 5K run. All of the races happen in downtown Minneapolis and along the scenic Mississippi River. It is a beautiful, rolling course perfect for athletes of who have different levels of experience.

Join us as we explore one of the city's trendy and historical neighborhoods, Mill District and St. Anthony on Main in Northeast Minneapolis. You'll enjoy the afternoon sampling food at the first Thai restaurant in Minnesota, drinking local Minnesota brewed craft beer at the oldest restaurant in Minneapolis, and enjoy a local favorite - the cheese curds.  You'll also enjoy mouth-watering pasta located in the historical Chase building, home-made gelato, and nosh on savory European style baked bread as we stroll through the local Farmers Market.

Along with sampling food we will also visit the Mill City Museum, stroll by the Guthrie, and enjoy gorgeous views of St. Anthony Falls as we walk along the Stone Arch Bridge into historical St. Anthony on Main.  You'll learn about the history of both these neighborhoods including a stroll along the oldest street in Minneapolis.  You'll taste and chat with other food-loving guests, and leave the tour with an appreciation for these distinct neighborhoods that most tourist never see!

“Inspired by Minneapolis: A Writers on the Town Tour and Workshop” 

 

Meet Rachel Gabriel—local writer and teaching artist—on the Stone Arch Bridge for a walking tour and writing workshop on Saturday, August 22 from 1:00-2:30 P.M. Meet beneath the blue balloon, and bring a notebook, pen or pencil, and your creative curiosity. A $5 registration fee is an investment in the future of The Loft Literary Center. We’ll start with a view of St. Anthony Falls and end at The Mill City Ruins, where we’ll practice the writerly skills of observation and sensory exploration through written words and images.

Children who are inclined to write and draw with a bit of encouragement are welcome to attend.

40 for 40 Anniversary Celebration for The Loft

The Loft Literary Center is proud to announce 40 for 40, a celebration of 40 events over 40 hours to celebrate 40 years of the Loft community. From 8 am on Friday, August 21, through midnight on Saturday, August 22, volunteers will host individual events, which will occur across the metro and beyond. All of the events will celebrate writing, literature and the people who’ve made the Loft one of the nation’s leading independent literary centers.

Event highlights include bowling with Loft program director and spoken word artists Bao Phi, campfire stories with renowned storyteller Kevin Kling, first-page critiques, yoga for writers, poetry on a stick, dinner parties, garden parties, readings of new work and more. The crowning event will be Countdown to Infinity, a party held at the Loft’s home at Open Book. The event will feature a slideshow of pictures from the other events, toasts to the Loft’s future, dancing and a New Year’s Eve-style countdown at midnight. Interested parties also have the opportunity to purchase a Golden Ticket, meaning they can attend almost all of the events with Executive Director Jocelyn Hale.

August 20, 2015, Thursday - Architect Avenue Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

In 1905 a contest was held in one of the farthest corners of Hennepin County, looking for well-designed homes for the up-and-coming middle class. Major Twin Cities architects were solicited to develop affordable homes that would combine “luxury, elegance, utility, and comfort” at a maximum cost of $3,000 (including landscaping and sidewalk).  Twelve local architects submitted unique and original designs, and in the end six homes (all of which remain today) were selected and built. Thomas Lowry developed and promoted this  mini-neighborhood, which soon became known as Architect Avenue.

This tour walks about 3/4 of a mile and is guided by Kathy Kullberg.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and the City of Minneapolis are concurrently developing a Downtown Service Area Master Plan and a Downtown Public Realm Framework, known collectively as Pathways to Places. These plans will form a vision for parks, open space and the public realm in downtown Minneapolis. Planning continues July 16th with the fifth Steering Committee meeting. Members of the public are invited to attend this and all Steering Committee meetings.

Mill City Live returns for its twelfth season with four outdoor concerts on Wednesday evenings in August.

Set in the museum's dramatic open air Ruin Courtyard, "Mill City Live" features four great evenings of outdoor music by top local artists.

The Mobile Karaoke Dance Party Tour with Mike Hoyt: Join Common Room and artist Mike Hoyt of Rolling Revelry and Norae Shanty fame on a bike-driven dance themed karaoke excursion down the Greenway. AUGUST 26
The Youth Tour: The geography of childhood is radically different than the geography of adults. A group of students from the Marcy Open School near The Soap Factory, ranging in ages from 10 to 13, have created a tour focused around Marcy Field, the open park that serves as a playground, gathering place and landmark for the school. The students will walk Common Room attendees through important historical landmarks, remembered experiences, sites for games, points of conflict, and other notable spaces they've experienced through in their childhoods.

The Minnesota State Fair Tour with Peter Haakon Thompson: Join Common Room and artist Peter Haakon Thompson, founder of The A Project and co-founder of Art Shanty Projects, at the Great Minnesota Get-together. See the fair through an artist's lens as we embark on an epic, endurance version of the artist's classic Auto-ethnographic Tours of the fair and its offerings. Should the current Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Assosciation (DMNA) become two independent neighborhood associations?

The DMNA serves both the Downtown East and Downtown West neighborhoods. On September 21,  DMNA Members will vote to accept or reject a resolution to form two independent neighborhood associations that would serve East and West respectively.  Anyone who lives, works or owns property in Downtown East or West is eligible to vote.

To prepare our two neighborhoods for this vote, four informational meetings/feedback sessions will be hosted by the DMNA and facilitated by City staff.  This will be your opportunity to learn the details of this proposed change and provide input on the future of our neighborhood association(s).
