August 14, 2013, Wednesday - The Soap Factory Common Room Tour

Time: Tour will depart from the Common Room sign at The Soap Factory’s front dock at precisely 6:30pm.

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

For the fifth year, Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant will be leading Common Room, a series of artist-led tours originating at The Soap Factory. This year, we'll be heading out in a 1953 Twin Cities Rapid Transit chartered bus into Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Common Room began as a month-long series of interactive art events, out of a refurbished art deco office at The Soap Factory. Since 2011, Vucci and Sturdevant have taken the Common Room concept outside the four walls of the Soap Factory and into the city, activating public spaces and redefining our relationship with our surroundings.

All tours will depart via bus from the Common Room sign at The Soap Factory’s front dock at precisely 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday in August. The tours will be approximately 90-120 minutes. Our buses will only accomodate about fifty people, so advance registration will be recommended, check back here in July for ticket information.

August 12, 2013, Monday - Above the Falls Biking and Walking Tours

Time: 6:00-8:00 pm

Above the Falls Biking and Walking Tours - North & Northeast Minneapolis Riverfront

More info and registration

What pops to mind when you think of the North and Northeast Minneapolis riverfront? Industry? Boom Island? Concrete? Yes, these are elements of this area, but there’s much more to get to know — and even more to come.

Join us, on foot or by bike, and get to know some of the lovely riverfront parks and trails just upstream of St. Anthony Falls and learn about the exciting new riverfront developments slated for our not-so-distant future. Then catch “The Adventures of Huck Finn”!

Join FMR and Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board ecologists, community engagement and river planning staff as we stroll or bike the area upstream of St. Anthony Falls (a.k.a. Above the Falls) north of downtown Minneapolis. Learn about the history and ecology of this stretch of the Mississippi River, get to know the parks and trails currently available for use, and find out what's in store for this section of the riverfront in the near future.

Choose either the walking or the biking tour. Both the tours and the movie are free! Minors are welcome but should be accompanied by an adult.
 — The walking tour be on city sidewalks and paved trails and is one mile, one-way from roughly Boom Island to a few blocks north of the Broadway Bridge. Registrants will receive directions to the meeting point. If you’d like a free bus ride back to the starting point, please let us know when you register.
 — The biking tour will be roughly seven miles total with interpretive stops every one-half to two miles. Biking will be on city streets and paved trails, looping from approximately Plymouth Avenue Bridge/Boom Island to Camden Bridge and back. Participants must provide their own bike and helmet.Registrants will receive detailed directions to the meeting point.
 — Both tours end at the Scherer Brothers site, where the movie “The Adventures of Huck Finn” will start 15 minutes after sunset, approximately 8:30 p.m., specially sponsored by RiverFirst as part of Music and Movies in the Park (as the page only lists the next two weeks of showings or so, you may need to download the full schedule).

Both the walking and bike tours feature different types of sites — parks, bridges, industrial sites, and greenway areas — that are slated for expansion, redevelopment or restoration. The tour seeks to connect community members to the Above the Falls and RiverFirst plans that guide the redevelopment work along this stretch of riverfront, as well as point out remaining opportunities for public invovement.

To ensure a high-quality experience where tour participants can ask questions and easily hear the speaker, capacity is limited and registration required. Registrants will be emailed directions to the meeting spot(s). To sign up, contact FMR Registrar Lindsay Hefferan at lhefferan[at]fmr.org or by selecting "Lindsay Hefferan" in the dropdown menu under "Category" in our contact form. She can also be reached at 651-222-2193 x24. Please include: the name of the event, whether you plan to join the bike or walking tour, your name, address and phone number and the number in your party.
