August 15, 2013, Thursday - The Minneapolites' DANGEROUS ONE-YEAR BASH at Dangerous Man Brewing

Time: 7:00pm-9:00pm

Location: Dangerous Man Brewing, 1300 2nd Street NE

A DANGEROUS ONE-YEAR BASH - The Minneapolites Celebrate One-Year of Local Food and Drink Blogging

The Minneapolites are four friends who realized that the kinds of blogs they loved to read coming out of other big cities just didn’t seem to exist in the Twin Cities. They wanted to hear stories from others on similar twenty-something budgets about great experiences around town, whether it’s the best-kept secret happy hour, a food truck worth flagging down, or a brewery churning out the tastiest beers. Every Friday, they present a curated round-up of events worth checking out over the weekend, as well as tips and treasures throughout the week to their followers on Facebook and Twitter.

In August, it will have been one year since the Minneapolites began sharing the best the Twin Cities have to offer with their readership. To celebrate this momentous first anniversary, the Minneapolites are throwing a birthday bash at the new and notable Nordeast brewery, Dangerous Man Brewing.

On Thursday, August 15th, the Minneapolites authors and their readers will gather to revel in craft beers, treats from sponsors, and special music from local artists. Minneapolites swag will be on hand, and several lucky party-goers will receive giveaway prizes from some of the Minneapolites’ favorite restaurants and bars in town.

This is a free event, open to the public.

August 14, 2013, Wednesday - Breakfast With a Preservationist: Penny A. Petersen presents Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront

Time: 8:00am to 9:00am

Location: Mill City Museum, ADM Conference Room: 6th Floor, 710 South Second Street

Preserve Minneapolis

Breakfast With a Preservationist: Penny A. Petersen presents Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront

Historian Penny Petersen will give a presentation based on her new book, Minneapolis Madams, a surprising and riveting account of the city’s red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it.

Paul Maccabee, author of John Dillinger Slept Here: A Crooks’ Tour of Crime and Corruption in St. Paul, says, “Minneapolis Madams is an utterly engrossing, behind-the-bordello look at the collision between the Mill City’s commercial sex industry, civic corruption, and advocates for sexual purity in the 1800s. Penny A. Petersen probes the nineteenth-century ecosystem of brothels and streetwalkers with a keen eye for political hypocrisy, sexual double standards, racial prejudice, and gender-driven economics. A gem of sexual and social history, this book illuminates the boudoirs of the long-forgotten red-light districts with insight, wit, and humanity.”

Parking: Street parking on South Second Street is usually available, and a parking garage across the street from the museum.

Cost: This event is free! Donations are welcome for coffee and sweet treats.
