March 3, 2020, Tuesday - Connecting Birds & People Through Bird-Friendly Coffee at East Side Neighborhood Services

Time: 7 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd St NE

Connecting Birds & People Through Bird-Friendly Coffee

Hosted by Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis

Can you help conserve birds and nature just by having a cup of coffee? Yes, if it’s the right kind of coffee!

Long-distance migratory birds spend only a few months of their annual cycle on the breeding grounds. During the remainder of the year, they fly often thousands of miles to and from the tropical habitats where they spend most of their lives. Innovative advances in tracking technology and wintering ecology make it very clear that the health of "our birds" is inextricably linked to how well they are nourished during the non-breeding season. As a commodity produced in the tropics and imported to North America, coffee also has a migratory path.

Join us for an evening exploration of the story of bird-friendly coffee with our guest speaker, Tom Will. Tom works as a Non-game Bird Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Regional Migratory Birds staff in Bloomington, MN. He has been an active participant in regional, continental, and international Partners in Flight activities and a long-time contributor to Partners in Flight science publications. He has lived and worked as an ornithologist and conservation ecologist in the Galapagos, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico before settling 20 years ago in Saint Paul.

March 2, 2020, Monday - The Amazing Wines of Portugal: A Full Overview at North Loop Wine

Time: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: North Loop Wine and Spirits, 218 Washington Ave N

The Amazing Wines of Portugal: A Full Overview

Twin Cities Wine Education LLC presents The Amazing Wines of Portugal Crisp whites, deep dry reds, dessert deliciousness, and everything in-between! If there is one wine country to keep an eye on right now, it's Portugal. While much of Spanish winemaking has hyper-modernized (international varietals, lots of new oak used, deeper and more extracted wines that don't seem to have a sense of place), Portugal has done an exceptional job of straddling the old world and the new world. Many of these wines fly under the consumer's radar due to several factors: unknown varietals (how often do you walk into a wine bar and ask for a Touriga Nacional?), unknown regions ("What do you have from Dao?"), and until recently old-school (in the bad way) winemaking techniques.

Named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” in both 2012 and 2018 and awarded “Outstanding Chef” and “Humanitarian of the Year” by the James Beard Foundation, José Andrés is a pioneer of Spanish tapas in the United States and is known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine and his award-winning group of more than 30 restaurants plus a food truck located throughout the country. Andrés is the only chef globally that has both a two-star Michelin restaurant and four Bib Gourmands.

Andrés is a committed advocate of food and hunger issues and is known for championing the role of chefs in the national debate on food policy. In 2010, Andrés formed World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides smart solutions to hunger and poverty by using the power of food to empower communities and strengthen economies.
