August 22, 2010, Sunday - The Home Grown Experience

The Homegrown Experience is a new event organized by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB).  Aligning with the MPRB Mission & Vision Statements, this event will focus on sustainability, connecting people to the land and providing healthy and enjoyable experiences.

The event will feature chef demonstrations, local restaurants, farmers, CSAs, co-ops, food producers, local vintners and brewers. In addition, an outdoor Farmers Market will be featured. Participants will be able to sip, sample, purchase and, most importantly, learn about local, sustainable and organic foods.

We are proud to offer a unique component to the event in the form of education. Through an educational stage as well as the ability to talk one-on-one with local food producers and chefs, people will gain greater understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from, and how to enjoy it-- the Homegrown way.

August 21, 2010, Saturday - 2nd Annual Night Owl Classic – Twin Cities

The Night Owl Classic is a 16.5-mile or 8.5-mile non-competitive bike ride along the Mississippi River at dusk.  The ride will start and finish at historic St. Anthony Main and tour some of the Twin Cities most well known landmarks all with the backdrop of the setting sun, rising moon and twinkling skyline.

Riders will be welcomed by a pre-ride kick off and registration starting at 6:30pm.  Two rides will be offered:

A Family ride, 8.5-mile ride departing from 7:00-7:30PM

A Hoot of a ride, 16.5-mile adult departing from 7:30-8:00PM

A pre-ride “kick-off” with food, music and various biking stations including a tune your bike and decorate your bike for the ride.  Pit Stops along the route will offer riders a place to grab a snack, enjoy entertainment or take a moment to take in the scenery. A post-ride “party” will welcome riders back with food and music and the ability to park their bikes and continue their Night Owl festivities at historic St. Anthony Main bars and restaurants.

"Greening the Riverfront" is a series of programs exploring our relationship with nature, past, present and future.  One of the programs features three Tuesday night tours. The first two took place in July (Pillsbury A Mill and St. Anthony Falls Laboratory), and the third is happening August 17.

Fee: $8 adults, $6 seniors and college students, $4 ages 6-17 and MHS members.

Visit the historic ruin of the Washburn A Mill, home to Mill City Museum, the Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle architectural firm, the McKnight Foundation, Mill City Farmers Market and Brighton Development, and tour the building with a representative from Meyer, Scherer and Rockcastle, the firm that designed the building. Participants will hear about sustainability as it relates to historic preservation and adaptive reuse, and the challenges in preserving a 130-year-old building and ruins. Ron Kroese, environmental program director for the McKnight Foundation, will talk about the foundation’s work in the sustainability of the Mississippi River. Included in the tour will be information about the building’s sustainability initiatives, including a presentation regarding a composting program undertaken in partnership with Eureka Recycling, and a presentation by Marjorie Hegstrom, director of the Mill City Farmers Market.
