September 17, 2015, Thursday - Next Generation Parks Lecture: Cities for All: The Role of Parks and Open Spaces

Time: 5:30pm – 8:00pm (presentation at 6:00pm)

Location: Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway Avenue

Next Generation Parks Lecture: Cities for All: The Role of Parks and Open Spaces

Through the Minneapolis Parks Foundation’s Next Generation of Parks™ Lecture Series, global design innovators and local thought-leaders showcase the most exciting new parks destinations and delve into important issues affecting our vibrant city and region.

The 2015 series features impressive talent and dynamic speakers from across the county and around the world – including our own backyard. This event will feature Gil Penalosa, Executive Director of 8-80 Cities. How can we create vibrant and healthy cities for everyone, regardless of age or social status? How can parks and open spaces improve the quality of life that attracts and retains people to their communities? How can we meaningfully engage citizens in the process of place making? Gil answers these questions in a dynamic and inspiring presentation about creating more livable cities that put people and nature at their center. Drawing on his experience as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation in Bogota, Gil presents some of the now widely celebrated approaches to urban regeneration through investments in parks and public spaces. Gil also draws upon examples in cities at the forefront of innovation in public space reclamation that demonstrate the many benefits parks and public spaces have on health, social inclusivity and city vitality. A reception and walk-up work stations will immediately follow the presentation. Proudly presented in collaboration with: City of Skate, Juxtaposition Arts, Major Taylor Bicycling Club of Minnesota, Minneapolis Bike Coalition, Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership and The Loppet. General admission tickets are $5 + fees ($6.27 total).

September 14, 2015, Monday - Book Launch for "Offstage Voices: Life in Twin Cities Theater" at Mill City Museum

6:30 pm Doors open

7:00 pm Program begins

Panel discussion with the author and notable Twin Cities theater professionals

8:00-9:00 Book Signing and Sales

Join us for a lively discussion about life in Twin Cities theater with Peg Guilfoyle, author of the new book, Offstage Voices: Life in Twin Cities Theater in conversation with notable theater professionals profiled in the book.

About the book:
...
In 1969, the Village Voice described Minneapolis as “America’s second theater city after New York.” In the forty-plus years since, the theatrical offerings of Minneapolis and St. Paul have only grown—everything from world-renowned venues to independent stages and innovative festivals—and the Twin Cities hold a prominent place in the national theater scene today. In Offstage Voices, author Peg Guilfoyle provides an in-depth look at this vibrant world and offers fascinating insights into what it takes to put on a production, from first script to closing night, and what it takes to make a living in Twin Cities theater.

“Captures the pulse and temperature of our theater world.” From the foreword by Sally Wingert

“If you’re curious about theater and how it works, this is the book for you.” Sheila Livingston, Guthrie Theater

“The Twin Cities theater community is one of the most vibrant in the nation. These stories from our most significant artists are an excellent resource for students (and their parents).” Marcus Dilliard, Chair, Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, University of Minnesota.

Time: 10:00am

Location: Tour meets at Riverplace (the corner of Main Street and East Hennepin)

The bustling commercial district surrounding East Hennepin Avenue has hosted many names throughout the years, but everyone knows its unforgettable landmarks . . . Surdyk’s, Nye’s, Kramarczuk’s, Historic Main Street, and Lourdes Church.

Located across the Hennepin Bridge from Downtown, this neighborhood was originally established in 1855 as the Town of St. Anthony Falls and later merged with The City of Minneapolis in 1872. Its proximity to the Mississippi River, Downtown, the University, and Northeast Minneapolis have made it an influential hub for transit, industry, and commerce. The last decade has brought dramatic change and the area around East Hennepin is now considered one of the trendiest and most exciting places in Minneapolis to eat, shop, and live. Fortunately, the area has managed to maintain its old-world flavor to this day.

Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” history of the busy streets, unique businesses, and colorful people that have shaped this popular walking neighborhood.   Hear amazing stories told from the perspective of individuals who have lived and worked here, through good times and bad. Come away with perspective on what life and work here might have actually felt like throughout this neighborhood’s most defining eras.

This tour will walk approximately 10-12 city blocks. The tour guide is Scott Parkin.
