October 26, 2011, Wednesday - The Minneapolis Horror: Tales from the Night Shift at Mill City Museum

Times: 6:30pm, 7:00pm, and 7:30pm

Location: Mill City Museum, 704 2nd Street South

Fee: $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children and MHS members.

Reservations: required, call 612-341-7555

Visit the Washburn A Mill at night as costumed actors dramatize the dangers of working the night shift and the many horrific disasters that have befallen the mill over the years. Hear accounts of the deadly 1878 mill explosion and the dangerous man-lift elevator, and take-in dramatic nighttime views of the Ruin Courtyard and the Minneapolis Riverfront from the ninth-floor Observation Deck.

The program takes its title from the headline of an 1878 American Miller magazine story that read, ”The Minneapolis Horror: Destruction, Devastation and Death.” The story described the disastrous flour dust explosion on the evening of May 2, 1878 that destroyed the Washburn A Mill and killed 18 workers.

October 26, 2011, Wednesday - Breakfast with a Preservationist at Mill City Museum

Time: 8:00am-9:00am

Location:  Mill City Museum, 710 South Second Street

Join Preserve Minneapolis at the Mill City Museum for 'Museum in the Streets'.

The Lake Street Council has organized a new project Museum that includes several bilingual heritage-discovery walks along Lake Street from Longfellow to Lake Calhoun. The tours will include stories of the events and people that have influenced the Lake Street we know today. Plaques highlighting the historic sites up and down Lake Street will form self-guided walking tours to be enjoyed by Lake Street communities and visitors alike. The plaques will be supported by a brochure that will invite people to discover Lake Street’s unique stories at their own pace, over the course of an afternoon or over return visits.

The Lake Street Council was created to support a vital Lake Street for businesses and residential communities along the corridor. The project is still researching pictures and stories on potential sites, as well as funding for installation. It is a great time for people interested in bringing history to life to get involved. Representatives from the Lake Street Council will talk more about the project.

This event is free! Breakfast treats and coffee will be provided (donations are welcome!). Metered parking is available on the street and in a parking garage across from the museum.

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building on a guided tour of the building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. Also covered will be how the mill ruin was converted to a museum and office building.

Although many parts of the A mill can be explored on a self-guided basis during a regular museum visit, this is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building, and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery as well as the Flour Tower show.
