November 24, 2018, Saturday - Tellabration! at Open Book

Tellabration!, an annual event promoted by The National Storytelling Network and hosted in over 300 venues around the world, will be celebrated in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, November 24, 10am – 9:30pm at Open Book, 1011 Washington Avenue S.

The day-long event, which is free to all, features a dozen panel discussions, classes, and workshops that explore a wide-range of topics about storytelling, narrative techniques in other disciplines (e.g. film, podcasts, poetry), and how to craft, promote, and refine stories for audiences and print. Topics include: Storycrafting, Creating and Hosting a Spoken Word Series (with five veteran hosts), Growing a Social Media Presence, and Smart Micro-Publishing That Makes the Effort Worth It.

There will also be a literature/merchandise table, games and stories to which guests can contribute, and, most importantly, a hosted open mike from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. where all visitors are invited to tell a story, or a story about a story.

The event will conclude with an evening concert in the Target Performance Hall featuring the donated talents of Kevin Kling, Tom Cassidy, Erica Christ, Dorothy Cleveland, Loren Niemi, Laura Packer, Richard Rousseau, Sue Searing, and Jim Stowell.

Three of the region’s story organizations - Cheap Theatre, Northlands Storytelling Network, and Story Arts of Minnesota - combined efforts to produce this engaging showcase of spoken word expertise and talent as part of Tellabration!’s international reach.

For additional details visit www.tellabrationmn.org. All classes and the concert are free though donations are appreciated. Doors for the concert open at 6:30 p.m.

November 24, 2018, Saturday - Washburn A Mill Tour at Mill City Museum

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Mill City Museum704 South 2nd Street

Washburn A Mill Tour

Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A guide will take visitors into the building's many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years, and the many changes to the building over time. This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its nonpublic spaces.

Tour highlights include:

  • The dramatic story of the 1878 Washburn A Mill explosion, and the other dangers that mill workers faced on a daily basis
  • "The Octopus," a large machine that directed wheat into nine storage bins
  • The Humphrey Manlift, a vertical conveyor belt that carried workers from floor to floor
  • The Rail Corridor where hundreds of boxcars arrived each day to unload wheat and carry away flour
  • Millstone plaza, originally paved with retired millstones and the location for lunchtime concerts by the Washburn-Crosby employee band in the 1920s
  • Evidence of the three major fires that have damaged the building in 1878, 1928 and 1991
  • The East Engine House, once home to a two-story steam engine, has been remodeled into two classrooms, while preserving the original railroad car pulling machinery

The tour includes no more than 1 mile of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.

Future dates: December 2, 29

November 24, 2018, Saturday - The New Renaissance Pt. III at Southern Theater

Time: 6 – 9 pm

Location: Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Avenue S

The New Renaissance Pt. III

A lyrical portrait of Afrofuturist healing. The New Renaissance Pt. III is the Twin Cities directorial debut of nationally-touring spoken word poet, Joe Davis. More than just a soul concert and spoken word performance, but a unique theatrical production. It’s an immersive experience of interdisciplinary artists, musicians, singers, dancers, poets and painters crafting a beautifully imaginative world for you to step into: a lyrical portrait of Afro-futurist healing. As a ‘choreopoem', a word coined by playwright Ntozoke Shange, it’s “a vibrant interplay between movement and language.” The story invites you to join a motley crew of seven multi-verse musicians who, after finding a fragmented message left by their ancestors, learn that music can open up transdimensional portals. They embark on an epic quest in search of 'The Way' to healing and meet an ensemble cast of intergalactic guides who propel them further along a journey of self discovery and transformation. We welcome you to travel through space and time. We welcome you to an unforgettable night of soulful inspiration. We welcome you to The New Renaissance Pt. III.
