July 12, 2018, Thursday - Twin Cities River Rats Show

The 2018 Twin Cities River Rats shows are scheduled for 7pm Thursday nights through August, and take place at 1628 West River Road (between the Plymouth and Broadway bridges). These are free events!

The Twin Cities Rivers Rats describe their show as an aquatic Broadway musical featuring multiple water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme. Facebook

Show Schedule:

6:30pm – Development show: Our members under the age of 18 and our new members get the opportunity to perform for the crowd before jumping into the “big” show.

7:00pm – The Big Show! The ski show is a 1 hour long themed-show. In between daring and beautiful acts on water, a storyline unfolds. We encourage audience participation and love applause!

8:00pm – Photos! Photo opportunities with the cast of the show, visit with the skiers, and even take a ride in our “triple-rig” boat (for a price!)

Location: Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Hennepin Island Hydropower Tour

Future dates: July 26, August 9 & 23

Explore the history of waterpower at St. Anthony Falls, including special access to view the exterior of an operating Xcel Energy hydroelectric plant. During the early 20th century, more than two dozen mills and hydroelectric plants used the waterpower from St. Anthony Falls, today just one is left: Xcel's Hennepin Island Hydroelectric Plant.

On this tour, a Mill City Museum guide will lead participants to Hennepin Island and Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, including special access to the power plant. Along the way, participants will learn about the historic uses of waterpower at the falls for flour milling, sawmilling and hydroelectricity, the role of hydroelectricity in Xcel Energy's green energy and energy efficiency initiatives and the future of waterpower on the Minneapolis riverfront.

This tour is presented in partnership with Xcel Energy.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces, as well as climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Some historic locations on this tour are not wheelchair accessible. Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

Discover the story of the National Historic Landmark Pillsbury A Mill, the largest flour mill in the world for many years, which recently reopened as the A-Mill Artist Lofts. A Mill City Museum guide will lead a tour of the former milling complex, including the rooftop deck and the basement waterpower facilities.

Highlights include the largest and best-preserved waterpower system in Minneapolis, with views straight down a 50-foot drop shaft through a glass floor. Guests will discover how the building functioned during the flour milling era; see the architectural highlights of the recently completed A-Mill Artist Lofts built within the historic mill buildings; and learn about the new hydroelectric plant that helps to power the complex. This tour is presented in partnership with A-Mill Artist Lofts.

The tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately-paced walking indoors and outdoors with some uneven surfaces. Tours begin at the gray door on 3rd Avenue SE at Main Street (around the corner from the main entrance at 315 Main Street SE).

cOMmon Grounds Yoga and Music Festival 

The festival promises to provide attendees an overall wellness experience by offering a variety of classes, activities, educational and fun workshops all against the background of nature and the sounds of the city. Participants are invited to attend classes centered around "Honoring the Earth", our theme for 2018. Move through different yoga styles and dive deeper by attending a workshop. All classes and workshops are intended to suit any eager yoga student with the ambition to learn and move through classes with their own variations.

The festival offers 75-minute classes starting at 9am, with an option to choose from (3) classes or workshops (4) times throughout the day. No need to preregister for classes, go to the yoga class or workshop that interest you the day of. Be prepared to arrive early for your top choices to ensure your mat space. Classes begin at 9am and registration opens at 8:15am. 

In addition to yoga, participants will have several options to stay entertained. Enjoy a massage, check out our mini offerings between classes, relax in our festival playground, hula hoop, listen to music, watch artistic performances, shop in our Vendor Village, enjoy different healthy food options, and much more.

Do you like animals? We do too! Join us for a bonanza in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden celebrating our fuzzy and feathered friends. Walk your dog in the inaugural Pooch Parade, make a critter mask, and practice your drawing skills with live animal models.

Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kid’s films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the lounge or in the garden.

Performance: Mil’s Trills
12 pm

Brooklyn-based children’s music group Mil’s Trills fills the Garden with family friendly tunes that will get you grooving.

Two time Parents’ Choice Award–winning Mil’s Trills is dedicated to creating positive, inclusive experiences for young audiences and families. Led by Amelia Robinson, who writes and performs original tunes, this performance features local musicians Peter Vircks, Pete Hennig, Jordan Hedlund, and Ben Kummer.

Event: Pooch Parade led by Brass Messengers
11 am

Bring your pet for the first annual Pooch Parade. The Brass Messengers will lead a joyful troupe of kids, adults, and all creatures great and small through the Garden.

The ten-member, Minneapolis-based street band Brass Messengers play a variety of musical styles as well as originals inspired by global sources, including music of Africa, the Caribbean, and Balkans.

Art Activity: Drawing Dogs
10 am–3 pm

Practice your sketching skills with real dogs as your models. We’ll provide the drawing boards, paper, pencils and dogs—you bring your creativity.

Local dog training company K9SF is providing our special models. Based in Minneapolis, K9SF offers one-on-one training that is custom tailored to you and your dog’s needs.

Art Activity: Critter Masks
10 am–3 pm

Don’t have an animal? No problem, you can become one! Build a mask modeled after your favorite animal with artist Mica Lee Anders. Wear it with pride in the parade and around the Garden.

Mica Lee Anders is a COMPAS visual artist who teaches children of all ages how to create meaningful, well-composed photographs, combining artistic concepts and techniques with fun, age-appropriate activities.

7/3/18 update: The July 7 Yoga Session has been cancelled.

Yoga in Gold Medal Park 

We meet Saturdays, May 26th thru September 1st. Each session will begin at 9 a.m. and end before 10.  Grab your mat (or a towel), a neighbor, and meet us by the orange sculpture. 

The sessions are free of charge and sponsored by the Friends of the Mill District charity. Come salute the sun and enjoy the beauty of our neighborhood with your friends and neighbors. Questions and comments can be sent to cjkittock@gmail.com.

Join a walking tour of St. Anthony Falls led by costumed History Player William de la Barre, the Austrian engineer who spent half a century developing Minneapolis flour milling and waterpower. Visit the Minneapolis riverfront, the west side milling district and the Stone Arch Bridge and hear about the many ways the falls have changed over the years.

William de la Barre, an Austrian engineer, arrived in Minneapolis in 1878 and was hired by C.C. Washburn to oversee reconstruction of the Washburn A Mill after its 1878 explosion. De la Barre was soon involved in the management of waterpower companies at St. Anthony Falls, and spent a 50-year career engineering the falls to maximize the power available to Minneapolis millers.

This tour includes about 1.5 miles of moderately paced walking on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility.
