July 21, 2016, Thursday - Warehouse District Smartphone Photo Tour

Time: 5:30 PM - 8 PM

Location: BKV Group, 222 N 2nd Street

Warehouse District Smartphone Photo Tour

Hosted by Preservation Alliance of Minnesota

We're going behind, between, and beneath the warehouses of Minneapolis' North Loop.

Architectural tours often present the 'glamour shot' view of buidlings. Here in the oldest section of the North Loop, we'll see those fascinating facades, but we will also slip around to the sides and backs of these historic buildings, where ghost signs, old pavements, and foundations tell another story about this lively district.

We'll gather for a drink and presentation by professional photographer Eric Mueller. Eric teaches how to maximize your smartphone for snapping stunning pictures on this tour and future excursions. Art history and architecture professor Kristin Anderson will lead us as we wind through the alleyways of the district, offering a new perspective on an old neighborhood.

July 17, 2016, Sunday - Milwaukee Avenue Historic District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

Time: 10:00am

Location: Meet at Milwaukee Avenue and East Franklin Avenue

Milwaukee Avenue Historic District Walking Tour with Preserve Minneapolis

In the late 19th century, the narrow street that became Milwaukee Avenue served as the first home in Minneapolis for immigrant families of Northern European workers who labored in the nearby Milwaukee Railroad yards and industrial shops.

A 1970s public agency’s renewal plan called for demolishing approximately 70% of the houses in the 35 block Seward West neighborhood, including all of the houses on Milwaukee Avenue. However, a neighborhood organization, the Seward West Project Area Committee (PAC), thwarted that plan, instead established rehabilitation of the houses as a principal development tool. PAC’s research led to Milwaukee Avenue’s local and national historic district designation.

The neighborhood organization’s 1970s redevelopment process rehabilitated 34 of the original 46 houses facing the street, and converted the once narrow street into a landscaped pedestrian walkway. The street’s unique architectural character renders a human scale quite different from the surrounding neighborhood. Milwaukee Avenue was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The tour will walk 1/4 mile. The tour guide is Bob Roscoe.

Friendly conversation soon turns confrontational and Amir makes a costly decision. A 2015 Tony Award nominee for Best Play and winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize, this 90-minute one-act has been described as a “blistering social drama about racial prejudices” (Variety) and a “combustible powder keg of identity politics” (Bloomberg).
