July 15, 2015, Wednesday - Mill City Summer Opera Presents The Daughter of the Regiment at Mill City Museum

Mill City Summer Opera (MCSO) is excited to present Gaetano Donizetti’s brilliant comedy The Daughter of the Regiment, directed by David Lefkowich, July 11-21, 2015.

Future performances: July 17, 19, 21, 8:00pm. Mill City Museum’s dramatic Ruin Courtyard will again be the venue for all performances.

This two act opera centers on Marie, the “daughter” of a regiment of soldiers who adopted her when she was a young girl and raised her as one of their own. Marie meets a local boy, Tonio, who joins the regiment in order to marry her. They soon fall in love. But the Marquise of Birkenfeld declares she is Marie’s aunt, and that Marie must leave the regiment to become a proper lady. Ultimately true love wins and Marie and Tonio are allowed to marry. The first act is set in the mountains of Tyrol, and the second takes place within the chateau of the Marquise de Birkenfeld.

Set to a French libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François Bayard, this opera is known for its lighthearted, catchy music that captures the story’s humor with its playful yet challenging vocals. The opera’s dialogue that will be in English and all music and arias are in French. Supertitles will translate the French into English.

The North Loop Warehouse District was the city’s warehouse and wholesaling hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when Minneapolis was a major distribution center for the upper Midwest. The area has retained its sense of time and place, with original bridges, brick-paved streets, and trains that still rattle through daily on the old track beds. The tour will explore the overall history of the district  and individual buildings and the architects who designed them.

This tour will walk less than one mile and will be guided by Rolf Anderson.

Discover Minneapolis' rich history and satisfy your thirst with a history pub crawl along Washington Avenue. Travel down this busy thoroughfare and hear about the importance of railroads, warehousing, flour milling, immigration, entertainment and vice to the story of Minneapolis. An air-conditioned bus will take participants through the neighborhoods along Washington Avenue from 35W to Plymouth Ave. N, with stops at a number of historic sights, including two watering holes housed in historic buildings.

The tour includes two blocks of moderately paced walking. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with limited mobility. Tours are held rain or shine. Ages 21 and up only. Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City Museum building. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over time.

This is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building and the only chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery, Baking Lab, Water Lab and Flour Tower show.

The Soap Factory presents: Shaping the Qualitative Phase of Contemporary Chinese Art

An exhibition featuring work by Lui Xuguang with artists Jia Yuming, Wang Zhi, Liu Qianyi, Meng Xianglong, Liu Danshu, and Zhang Jinghan. Curated by Professor Tom Rose.

The Zhuangzi is regarded as one of the greatest literary works in all of Chinese history, and has been called "the most important pre-Chin text for the study of Chinese literature”, thus predating what we currently call China. The Zhuangzi is named for and attributed to Zhuang Zhou — "Master Zhuang" (Chinese:"Zhuangzi") — born around 369 BCE in Song state, near the borders of modern Henan and Shandong provinces of modern China. He advocated a mode of understanding that is not committed to a fixed system, but is fluid and flexible, and that maintains a provisional, pragmatic attitude towards the application of categories and evaluations to existence and objects. He died around 286 BCE. A coruscating exposition of a prescient hermetic philosophy, the Zhuangzi, examines existence through the experience of an object, describing object-ness through metaphorical and metaphysical states.

The Zhuangzi posits that the metaphysical existence of objects and their intrinsic form is both a product of the human interpretation of an object’s nature, and of the various relationships that are possible between an object’s actual material state and of its essence in creating space for human spirituality. While the image of an object (art) establishes a human-centric method for the contemplation of the connections between physical states, through both time and space, art also creates multiple possible readings and meanings for existence.  In art relationships between people co-exist equally with the relations with the space of existence, defining the entire process (time and space) of human and object existence.  Contemporary civilization has discovered interpretations that offer a harmonious relationship between the direct vision and the space of art — through mutual connections in a common space, works of art can present similar patterns of communication.
