February 22, 2019, Friday - Live Music at Day Block Brewing

Time: 9pm | 21+ | $12

Location: Day Block Brewing Company, 1103 Washington Avenue South

Tonight: Tacky Annie/Silverback Trio/Excessive

In 2018, singer/songwriter Rachelle LaNae combined forces with musician/producer Andrew Frederick, and their love of pop music forged Tacky Annie. The collision of their sounds creates dance-inspiring, carefree melodies with powerful vocals and bass-driven rhythm. Fans of Sylvan Esso, Phantogram, and Chvrches will love their light-hearted quirkiness and intense, energy-infused sound that crosses genre, explodes expectations, and keeps you moving.

Silverback Trio is an abrasive contemporary jazz / jam group from Minneapolis featuring David Hirsch on sax & keys, Byron Johnson-Blanchard on drums, and Brent Wallace on six-string bass. Their debut CD was released June 2017. An aggressive and sometimes meditative style of music encompasses a broad range of textures all the while remaining in a ‘jazz’ type of sphere making for a surprisingly broad appeal. A unique, diverse, expansive sound for essentially a bass/drums/sax line-up.

Excessive is an Electro/Acoustic looping trio, heavily improvised, and dense with groove featuring:
Eric Carranza - Keys, Synths, Guitars, Bass, Electronics
Matty Harris - Saxophones, Bass Clarinet, Flutes
Braden Dickie - Acoustic Drums and Cymbals

Times: See below link

Location: Lab Theater, 700 First Street N

Crash.Dance.Productions presents: Proxy

February 21 – 24

Inspired by the “brain in a vat” thought experiment, where experiences are simply figments in a disembodied brain, Proxyleaves the repetitious, unexamined world to discover what lies behind the veil of the reality accepted as truth. Dancers become cartographers, creating a stage-wide image of coordinates, waves and lines. Like a morphing inkblot, our discoveries lie in precisely how much we let ourselves see. First presented at the Lab in August of 2018, Proxy returns by popular demand. General admission: $15; priority seating: $30.

February 21, 2019, Thursday - Schubert Club Mix: The Westerlies at Machine Shop

Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Machine Shop, 300 Second Street SE

Schubert Club Mix: The Westerlies

Based out of New York (but originally from Seattle), the self-described “accidental brass quartet” featuring two trumpets and two trombones takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from the West to the East. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s Fresh Air), this Mix performance in the Schubert Club’s newest venue, Minneapolis’ Machine Shop, will explore jazz, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both "folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music).

Expect the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band and the charm of a family sing-along.

February 20, 2019, Wednesday - Annette Peters European Masterclass with 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits at Aloft

2/20/19 UPDATE: Due to miserable driving conditions and wanting our customers to be safe and warm, we have decided to reschedule the tasting with Annette Peters to March 6th from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Aloft Hotel

Time: 6:30-8:30pm

Location: Aloft Hotel, 900 Washington Avenue S

Annette Peters European Masterclass hosted by 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits

Reservations: Call 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits at 612-339-4040, or email info@1010wws.com. The cost of the event is $25, which can be used toward the purchase of anything that night.

Annette Peters is the President of Domaines and Appellations, a local importer. Domaines and Appellations seeks out small producers and family farms making wines that reflect their place of origin  as purely and naturally possible. The goal is to deliver wines with a high pleasure factor, precisely made, easy to drink wines that are affordable, made more for the glass and less for the pedestal, but inspiring  intellectual exercise if you should so chose. They also are conscientiously geared to serve a legacy of family, environment, tradition, and culture.

We look forward to many exciting tastings in the new year. This is one of our favorites.  I encourage the wine novice to the serious oenophile to attend this tasting of some of Annette's favorite selections.  Ask the people who attended Annette's Class last year, it will be memorable.

This is the tentative line up:
