August 10, 2012, Friday - In Association: Collaboration in the Book Arts Opening Reception at MCBA

Time:  6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Join us THIS FRIDAY to celebrate the opening of In Association: Collaboration in the Book Arts

"By its very nature, collaboration is about transformative experience. Ideas are brought forward and expanded upon and generated into something new. My work with Tom Rose has been about the transformation of events, images and text into the dynamic form of the book." – Wilber H. "Chip" Schilling

"Collaboration is integral to my work. My role is akin to that of the conductor of a small ensemble in which each member has a unique voice. The goal is to bring out the best in each player and excellence in the final composition. There is synergy and magic in that." – Harriet Bart

The book arts are, at heart, a collaborative discipline. Join us this Friday, August 10 from 6 to 9pm to celebrate the opening of four exhibitions wherein the power and potential of collaborative artmaking is revealed:

Thomas Rose and Wilber H. Schilling on view in the MCBA Star Tribune Foundation Gallery

The Collaborative Work of Harriet Bart on view in the Open Book Cowles Literary Commons

The Manulua Project on view in the Open Book lobby gallery

Burlesque of North America and Permanent Art & Design Group on view in the Open Book lobby gallery

August 8, 2012, Wednesday - The Soap Factory Common Room Tour

Time:  Tour will depart from the Common Room sign at The Soap Factory’s front dock at precisely 6:30pm.

Location: Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE

For the fourth year, Sergio Vucci and Andy Sturdevant will be leading Common Room, a series of artist-led tours originating at The Soap Factory and heading by foot, bicycle and mass transit into Minneapolis, seeking to activate public spaces and redefining our relationship with our surroundings.

Common Room began as a month-long series of interactive art events, out of a refurbished art deco office at The Soap Factory. Since 2011, Vucci and Sturdevant have taken the Common Room concept outside the four walls of the Soap Factory and into the city.

August 8th: Skyway Tour
Go into the skyway system, and ask a passerby, “Why does Minneapolis have skyways?” Odds are they would say something about the weather. Popular narratives of the skyway system today begin with the premise that they were built to shelter residents from the city’s notoriously long and cold winters. Yet when the downtown skyway system was originally conceived, concerns about the cold weather climate were nowhere to be found. This after-hours tour of Minneapolis’ skyway system, with historical facts, highlights and a roving Q&A, will be led by geographer and “sidewalk philosopher” Bill Lindeke.

Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Avenue South

Let's Go from A to Z! with Ellen Ferrari

For families with children ages 2-10

The Turn-Around, Upside-Down Alphabet Book by Lisa Campbell Ernst will introduce the sillier side of our 26 letters, and then we will all help to create our own silly 26 letter stamps to print on the printing press. Print ABC broadsides and turn them into cards, books and magnets. Plus, practice your letters with alphabet cookies!

Join Ellen Ferrari for Tuesday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or adult/child teams) may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

$30 ($27 members) per adult/child pair; $15 ($14) each additional participant
