Tipped off by a post on Minnescraper, we walked over to check out the start of demolition on the site of the future Park Vista Condo project. The first building is almost down, one more to go.
BTW - If you're a urban development or construction geek, you need to become a member of Minnescraper, it's free!
It seems that the redevelopment strategy for Downtown East would make sense whether the new Vikings Stadium ends up in Arden Hills or the Minneapolis Farmers Market site.
Even better, the $50 million in proceeds could be reinvested in the Downtown East neighborhood.
From the Star Tribune:
In the last decade, significant redevelopment has occurred in the Downtown East area, with the addition of new residential condominiums and apartments, the Guthrie Theater and the Mill City Museum.
Removing the Metrodome from Downtown East would replace an obstacle with a catalyst. The 22-acre Metrodome site could be redeveloped to serve as the centerpiece of the new neighborhood.
The proceeds of the sale of the site could be as much as $50 million. That money could be used to assemble the land needed in the Farmers Market area and remove one of the few drawbacks to an exciting sports and entertainment venue on the west side of downtown.
Downtown East includes the Historic Mill District of Minneapolis.
Only one open house is scheduled for this weekend - North Star Lofts #503 offers a view into the historic woolen blanket mill on Sunday from 1:30-3:30. Looks like it will be a nice weekend for a stroll across the Stone Arch Bridge - perhaps to grab some ice cream at the new location of Wilde Roast at Riverplace!
