A Cold Week on the Mississippi: Seeking New Ideas for Minneapolis' Upper Riverfront

It takes a vivid imagination, even for some of the world's best designers, to conceive a grand future for Minneapolis' Upper Riverfront, lined as it is with scrap yards, low-slung industrial plants and sparse patches of woods that often seem less lovely than forlorn.

And so, it was only fitting that during their site visit this week the four teams competing to redesign the waterfront were pelted with a brutal blast of sleet and snow that must have left them wondering why anyone would venture out to the river's edge in the first place.

Minneapolis Riverfront Designers Visit City this Week

The four teams of architects competing to redesign the north Minneapolis riverfront are in town this week.

The groups -- from New York, Beijing, Boston, and Berkeley -- are finalists in the Riverfront Design Competition.

They're visiting Minneapolis to get an up-close look at the five-and-a-half mile stretch of riverfront that city leaders hope to turn into a world-class outdoor space.

The River by Design — Competition Underway to Improve North and Northeast Minneapolis Riverfront

The Minneapolis Parks Foundation and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) are spearheading an exciting effort — the Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition. Four design teams have been selected to create designs for 220 acres of parkland and the surrounding neighborhoods and business districts along 5.4 miles of river from the Stone Arch Bridge to the northern city limits. Long an industrial area, this upper section of the river offered little of the riverfront green space enjoyed by those south of downtown.
