Islands, caves, springs and the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River: Over centuries, all these shaped the experiences of many peoples living near and traveling through this area. The waterfall itself received many names: to the Ojibwe, Kakabika – severed rock; to the Dakota, Minirara – curling water, or Owahmenah – falling water. We will walk down to the water’s edge, learn more about the area experienced by indigenous peoples and see how this site helps tell the national story of changes in the land. National Park Service Ranger David Wiggins, with decades of experience leading walks along the Mississippi River, will share his deep background in history, ecology and our changing relationship with our Mississippi and our lands.

The other day I was reading the paper and was attracted to a headline by Minneapolis author Greg Breining. I've followed Breining's work off and on for a couple of years, and he interviewed me once for a story. I expected that he would have something intelligent to say on the subject.

Children and families are invited to enjoy a Quest of the Minneapolis Riverfront. A Quest is a way to explore local community treasures and learn more about the history of a place. The tour will take participants on a ramble along the riverfront outside Mill City Museum’s backdoor.

Learn about factory life for girls at the North Star Woolen Mill, still standing at the west end of the Stone Arch Bridge.

Ok, it's not much yet, but the design competition for the Minneapolis' upper riverfront (the area extending from the Stone Arch Bridge to Minneapolis' northern city limits, along both sides of the Mississippi River) has it's own website now.
Not much there except the key dates for the competition, a link to a project description document and a link to the RFQ. I hope they publish the design entries and keep us up-to-date on the competition.
